Ainu embroidery is a precious cultural art that Ainu people have handed down. When you look at the work, which is a traditional craft, it can take your breath away. You can experience Ainu embroidery in a circle where locals gather. The representative is Ikuko Okada.

【予約する / Reserve】
まずは、岡田さんに電話連絡し、体験の日時を決めましょう。
そして、体験日に基本情報にある川沿生活館へお越しください。
First, call and decide the date and time of the experience.
【コースターを作ります】
初回体験では、コースターを作ります。
コースターの大きさは、15×15cm(出来上がりは13×13cm)です。
初心者でも約2時間くらいで、このコースターができるそうですよ。
In the first experience, you will embroider a coaster. The size of the coaster is 15x15cm ( 13x13cm when finished). Even beginners can do this coaster in about 2 hours.

アイヌ文様について / About Ainu Pattern
アイヌ文様は、基本的に渦巻きの「モレウ」、トゲのような括弧(かっこ)文様の「アイウシ」、菱形の「シク」の三種類。
これらを組合わせて、デザイン性を高めたり、意味を持たせたりするんですね。

There are basically three types of Ainu patterns: the swirling “moreu”, the braided pattern “Aiusi” like a splinter, and the rhombus “siku”. You can combine these three to create an enhanced design. This image is an Aiusi pattern.
フッチコラチとは / about Huci koraci
【フッチはおばあさん】
「フッチ」は、アイヌ語で おばあさん。
「フッチコラチ」で おばあさんのように という意味になります。
“Hucikoraci” means “like grandmother” in the Ainu language.
【サークルのメンバー】
サークルのメンバーは、15人。
サークルの活動日には、毎回12～13人ほどの参加人数がいるそうです！
いつも80％以上の出席率があるという熱心なサークルなんですよ。
メンバーの年齢は、30～70歳代で、男女比は1：14です。
There are 15 members in hucikoraci. There are 12 to 13 participants each time on the activity day of the circle! It is an avid circle with an attendance rate of 80% or more.
【和気あいあいの雰囲気 / friendly atmosphere】
サークルの活動時間が10:00～15:00のため、皆さん、お弁当を持参して来るそうです。
とても雰囲気がよく、取材時も気さくに声をかけていただきました。
Since the activity time of the circle is from 10:00 to 15:00, everyone brings their lunch box. The atmosphere is very good.

アイヌ文様刺繍伝承者は色使いのマジシャン！ / Colored magician
アイヌ文様刺繍の伝承者である岡田さんは、色使いのマジシャン！
古典的なパターンを活かしつつ、カラフルに仕上げることを目指しています。
パステルカラーを使いたい。この色のあふれている時代に、色を使わない手はない。
といい、グラデーションを取入れた、新たな色を用いた刺繍への挑戦を行っています。
この画像の作品は、色の変化で四季の移ろいを表現した作品です。
拡げて写真を撮っていると、背後から
「私たちの財産だもんね」
「作る時は大変だったよね」
などと聞こえてきました。
この作品を見た時に鳥肌が立つほどの感動を覚えましたが、それは皆さんのご苦労あってのものなのだな、と感じました。
Ms Okada, an expert in the folklore of Ainu pattern embroidery, is a magician who uses colours! The goal is to create a colourful finish using classic patterns. I want to use pastel colours. There is no hand that doesn’t use colour in this era of colours. This is a challenge for embroidery using new colours with gradation. The work in this image expresses the transition of the four seasons by changing colours.
